What a beautiful wedding....the weather held off for all of their pictures and their outdoor ceremony! Major props to my second shooter ~ Betsy...she found this fabulous tile in the womens bathroom...good thing no one walked in on us while we had the lights off and a spotlight on expensive wedding rings on the floor...but I think the results were worth it! Nice find! I am in love with the pictures of dana in the stairwell of the country club....they need to be in Vogue!

My apologies right now, for all the photos....you know me, I love the new and different things and their wedding will be for me in August. Here are a few....of my favs from their engagment ceremony. His family and friends come and present her with jewelry, and her ring, and she presents his ring. As you can see below...he jokingly presented a gigantic fake diamond at first...which created quite a few laughs. I love the 3rd photo...the Joy in Aisha's face and the anxiety and nervousness in her fathers...I think that says alot. Aisha ~ you are strikingly beautiful in these photos...enjoy your preview, and I will be adding a slideshow link later tonight, when I can attach the right music to it. Enjoy!

Workshop photos...and the Kroll Boys

Here are the adorable Kroll boys who modeled for our workshop...and true to their age, did a great job...cooperating and being boys all at the same time ~ perfect example for everyone. The workshop went great after the power decided to come back on around 7pm on the first night...I was a little worried. Thanks for everyone's flexibility. I enjoyed meeting all of you....and Im pretty sure all you Cannon users might be switching to Nikon after all of my "well my camera has it here" comments! Thanks so much to all you for coming and I look forward to seeing your progeress...if any of you took pictures of everyone shooting, or your favorite photo taken ( Iknow some of you got the boys together, while I was talking) and forward it to me.

I really had fun shooting with you guys, you ( and Nicole's sister) picked great location! We shot at the John King Book store in Detroit...the largest bookstore in michigan, and then around the Eastern Market....there is even one of all of us in a garden ball for fun! Lauren (bride below) has confessed to checking my blog constantly...and I know their honeymoon flight leaves at 8pm tonight...so I tried to get a few to you, but I really had a hard time picking out of more than 1000 images. Her family emailed me to request some photos of her that I took back in the fall. Amazing for this little girl and this couple, the beginning of this forever family for her....is God's way of taking something so wrong and making it beautiful ~ I am so thankful for this family....you are amazing.

What ~ Basic Photography Boot Camp

This entire session was shot at an ISO of 1250.....every single shot! I never would have gone above a 500 on a portrait session with any other camera. Ahhhh...the precious Nikon D3. I owe my husband BIG..I have been on the waiting list for 2 months or so and thought I would never get it until summer. Then it came in while I was in Miami...and they told him we had 24hrs to pick it up, or they would call the next person on the list...he went and grabbed it for me. It is amazing..... Here are Weezie ~ Frankie ~ and Rocco ...love those names, they are friends of ours!

It was great meeting you two last Friday, and I am really excited about shooting your traditional Chinese wedding this summer! This session was in downtown GR and in the JW...they have great colors and lighting. Bonus points to Sina for suggesting to push Sarah in the luggage cart for fun...I of course, encouraged it and the valet guys thought it was funny! These were all shot with my new D3....the best camera EVER! I will post more on that later...I shot an entire session at 1250 ISO...stay tuned to see how amazing hose look! The Heart Gallery

I have been waiting to post about this, but had to wait until the gallery was debuted, and it did, last week. This issue is in a very deep part of my being and I don't think I will ever feel that I have done enough for this cause. As many of you already know, our oldest son was adopted through foster care. We have had several other children in out of our home, from 2 days to 14 yrs old. It IS a tough job...I'm not going to sugar coat that, and the rewards sometimes are never seen. But I truly feel we all have been called to take care of these kids...in one way or another. We still have continuing relationships with two of our old "foster" kids, even though they have returned home. Some are making great choices, and others...our heart aches for them, for fear of seeing them repeating the cycle. Still, we are honored that God has allowed us to be apart of their lives in whatever way we can.

My point...there is a Michigan Heart Gallery exhibit that is made to create awareness of all the children that are up for adoption, and travels the state on display. Just in the state of Michigan, there are at any given time, 4,000 kids.... that are waiting to be adopted in the foster care system. Only a little over half of those ARE adopted. There is also a video put on by MARE that you may need kleenex for...here is the link **click here** If you would like to see the current gallery, it will be local at the newest branch of the Wyoming library until March 1st.

I helped photograph three of these kids that are up for adoption....two of them at St John's home, where they are living temporarily....I cried all the way home from those sessions. It breaks my heart to think they are living there....not with a family...these kids belong somewhere... God never intended kids to be in a facility like that...please give adoption or foster care some serious thought. It will change a child's life...forever. Photographers, consider volunteering next year....They only need one picture, but I end up proofing around 20....just email them if you are interested.

Here are the girls I photographed and a little about each of them.

Nikki 14yrs old~ describes herself as a "neat freak." She likes to swim, dance, and play board games. She loves amusement parks and hanging out with her friends, playing guitar, singing, and dancing. Nikki has been waiting for adoption since May 2007.

Jarvanna 13 yrs old ~ She would love to have her own clothing line when she grows up. She loves shopping, ice cream, listening to music, and writing stories. Jarvanna has been waiting since November 2006.

Nacole 9yrs old ~She loves chinese food, taking music lessons, and going to the movies. She can't wait to wear high heels and earrings! Nacole has been waiting for adoption since December 2005.

If you haven't had a chance to check my crazy summer / fall calendar on my wedding site.....don't...I try not to..it's overwhelming!

Most of my weekends are booked...but there are a few holes in the schedule. All that to say....plan ahead. If you want a weekend session, book now! I will be booking in the next month for the entire summer / fall season...so please call or email me if you'd like to book a session.

.... bridal session?

It is a session before your wedding day, in your wedding dress, usually shot on the day of your hair and makeup "run through" ... or you could do you hair and makeup the way you REALLY want to..but your parents probably wouldn't go for it on your wedding day! I will keep your dress as clean as possible or I'll have it cleaned for you! Nothing too "trash the dress" I promise. It's just nice to take photos without the pressure and nervousness that comes along on your wedding day. I will take those too, this doesn't replace that.

Brides ...Just to see how many of my brides ....(24 this year!) and others (you don't have to be my bride) are following my blog....the first two brides to post a comment on my blog....will get a FREE bridal session as soon as spring hits or when your dress is finished, which ever come first.

Yes, I have been missing in action on the blog...so sorry! I have a good excuse though....Chicago..Miami...Workshops....

Our family went to Chicago last weekend to visit my brother and his family ~ they just moved there a few weeks ago. We had a blast! I think we're a little crazy..because between our 2 families, we have 6 kids, 8yrs and under and we ventured downtown with them, they loved all the train, cab, and bus rides, I even made my son take some pics on the train..he's used to it by now! The only picture I snapped of the city was from the Sears tower, but it was very foggy.

Then Monday morning I flew to Miami ~ yes, I know ~ lucky me..I was just excited to wear flip flops! Our friends moved there about...10 months ago and just had their first baby, they flew me there to shoot their new little man. John & Heather ~ you are amazing parents, and I enjoyed seeing both of you. Thanks for having me!

Just this weekend, I conducted a basic photography workshop, and that was a lot of fun and will be posting more of that later.

Twins....@ 4 months

Yes, the twins on the front of my website are 4 months!! They have developed into their own look and personality, and still adorable. Asher was the smallest when he was born...clearly he has surpassed his sister! Nate & Heather...you guys are amazing parents...I enjoy watching you juggle everything (everyone...literally) At their newborn session, we smooshed them into a bread bowl (in my baby gallery still)...but we decided we couldn't do that again - too big, but maybe when they're sitting, they can fit one at a time..so check back in about 2-3 months for that photo comparison! Oh - the "foot in mouth" shot...this must be a twin thing...but they are always sucking each others hand or foot if it's nearby...glad I caught one! Here are a few favorites from this morning.

Thank you to those photographers who signed up for our Whispers meetings over the weekend, but I am hoping to get more. I am posting this on my blog because this it really is the most important time that I spend with families and my camera. At the same time I started my photography business, I also began volunteering for families in the the Michigan area who needed bereavement photography.

With permission from my friends Matt & Lydia, I share their story which inspired this program...

About four years ago, our friends moved to Toronto. Lydia was due to have her baby soon after they moved there. We were very excited to get the phone call telling us that they had baby Finn. They said he was healthy, but they just needed to clear out his airway a bit. Then we got a call saying to pray, because it was something more serious, he was having seizures. There were so many people involved in the phone calling, because of the situation, so the next phone call we received, was telling us that baby Finn was stable, and Matt & Lydia were waiting for some test results. At this point we were debating if we should drive out there or not. and within 5 minutes of that call, we received another call saying that baby Finn was not going to make it. Matt & Lydia lost Finn within 48 hours of his birth.

This was a life changing experience for me...when Lydia returned to Grand Rapids, she had taken so many rolls of film of baby Finn. I realized how invaluable and important those photos were to them. To help them remember, value, grieve, and share Finn. They were so valuable to all of us, we gathered on what would have been his one year birthday, to hear, share, and look at his photos. Yes, it was sad, but also freeing to grieve, and remember, Finn deserves it...he was and still is God's child. A life to be valued.

The hospital calls us to photograph babies who are as little as 20 weeks gestation to babies who are in the NICU, or babies who have past away just before their due date, or shortly after birth. This is not an easy....

Do I cry? Almost in every session, or on the ride home. No matter how many I've done, it does not make it any easier to watch a parent lose their child. The second session I ever photographed, I got stuck in the corner on the opposite site from where the door was because there were so many family members in the room. I was the there when the mother took her baby off life support and watched her scream as her baby died in her arms. I watched her plead with God, why?

I don't know those answers, but I do know that God has planned every life....and every life is created with purpose. This is why I started Whispers....to share in each parents journey.. to validate that their child's life is valuable and worthy of remembering.

Please if you have a DSLR camera....we need your help. Butterworth L & D has 8,000 births a year, 360 of those are losses, and the NICU has about 50 losses a year. We don't photograph all of those, probably about half. This program has been suspended since November because we didn't have enough photographers to cover the need that this hospital was asking us for.

We have 2 information meetings planned for Friday, February 8th from 3:30-5p and Monday, February 11th from 7-8:30pm. There is no obligation to join...just come and listen to the details of the program, experiences, and the bereavement director at Spectrum. To actually join, you have to become a Spectrum volunteer, and agree to be on call one day a month, and volunteer once every 6 months. The photographers that have been helping the past year and a half are so valuable to our program, and I so appreciate each and every one of you.

If you have questions about any of this, please email or call me. I wanted to included a slideshow for you. It is a family that called me that was would be delivering their baby, that because of many anomalies, would not live more than a few hours after birth, that was if she even survived the delivery. They weren't even monitoring the baby during labor, so no one know if this little girl would be alive when she delivered. None the less, mom wanted pictures of her baby when she was put on her chest, so I was there for the delivery. MIraclulously, she was born alive and her parents were able to spend hours with her. You will see in these photos the joy and love that these parents have for this little girl admist the grief that was to come. That is beautiful, these moments for them to remember. This is why you need to volunteer....

Some of you have waiting for this announcement quite patiently, others are hearing about this for the first time. Many of you have emailed me questions and/or are looking for instruction on how to use the amazing camera that you have. I would love to share my knowledge with you. It doesn't matter if you shoot Nikon or Cannon....and use PC or a Mac. Here are some topics we will cover : Understanding your camera, lens differences, shooting correctly, photoshop technique, and I will instruct and allow you to shoot a newborn baby (hopefully 2 weeks and under) and an older child or a bride for practice and to add your portfolio. These sessions will also provide the photos I will use for the Photoshop training. I will also give you a packet of everything we talk about and a CD of a few free Photoshop actions that I use! This will be a fun informal day and a half of learning through conversation and instruction. The workshop will take place at our studio at 401 Hall SW in Grand Rapids, MI. We will begin on Friday from 5:30 -9pm and continue on Saturday from 9am to 6pm...or maybe a little longer if desired! Drinks & snacks will be provided on Friday evening and Saturday will include lunch and snacks as well. The cost of this workshop is $150 **I will need to have a minimum of 5 attendees, I have 4 already. Just before Christmas, I had a few last minute sessions and an engagement (which I will blog tomorrow maybe) and also a commercial shoot - which is usually not blog worthy, but this was kind of fun. I shot Mark's wedding (he's pictured in #4) back in September. Mark's company Higher Ground makes laptop bags that are awesome and very colorful. They are also featured in the online Apple Store. We shot all of these on the U of M campus.

If you have a Mac - you know what this is..if not, you are clearly missing out, and not just on "photobooth" My husbands family is a bunch of PC users and thought this was quite funny...be your own judge.

I hope everyone has had an enjoyable Christmas! Mine has not been exactly how I imagined this year...We went to Indianapolis this year from Wed through Christmas Eve, and on Sunday, Tim & I were not feeling that well, and 2 of the kids were sick as well, feverish and coughing. Last night on Christmas Eve we were back here in GR at Grandma's house and we ended up taking my oldest to the ER because he woke up wheezing at midnight....they said he has croupe and is very contagious...(so we all have some form of croupe, we're just not all wheezing) so we came back to our own home this morning so we didn't contaminate the rest of the family and cousins! Missed the big yummy dinner, and resorted to frozen pizza and mac & cheese, that's all a sick cook could spare the energy for! It's better than 2 yrs ago when the Ruff clan (9) **except me! ...got a violent stomach flu..a new person got it each day...anything was better than that year!

Anyways...for the second year we have adopted a family for Christmas, instead of giving presents to each other at our house this year. I just got this families info the day before we left to go out of town, and then we all got sick, so it's a little late this year, but I'm am posting this here in hopes that if anyone would like to help, it would be awesome. We will buy some things now and maybe continue to help them throughout the next few months. I'm not sure if you want to tackle this, but I know there are places where you could get a gift certificate, like Mally's Beauty Supply or Sally's or something like that. She is also requesting a backpack (she says, "the ones that only have one strap that go over the shoulder"). Some other things...a winter jacket, gloves, hat, scarf and flat boots...no heel.

His list says he enjoys playing xbox and playstation, but I'm not certain that they own either of these gaming systems because they are also on the list... CD Player, socks, black gloves, hats, shoes size 8 1/2

Leticia enjoys coloring and drawing, reading, making jewelry...she needs women's 7 1/2 shoes, bras (38C), size 7 underwear, head bands and hair ties, AA and AAA batteries

Rafael (son, 8 years old)
Size: boys 16 for pants, 14-16 boys shirts
Rafael enjoys playing with cars, playing with wrestlers, coloring...he needs boots, socks and size 14 boxers (boys)

The family listed some other things: vacuum cleaner, blender, silverware, dishes, toaster, shower curtain (green), bathroom rug, full size sheets and blankets for 2 beds, a DVD player, statue of the Virgin Mary...

They rely 100% on public transportation, so a bus pass is probably something they really NEED...and Meijer gift cards for food are always good too...

Well, I have had so many questions from my clients, if my kids are on my website...I think there is only one of each of them. Getting pictures of them is actually harder than you think. They have what's called "PCS" Photographers Child Syndrome" They HATE my camera! But, it's getting better. My 4 yr old daughter did a fantastic job this fall with her pictures, and I am finally editing them ( a month and a half later!) Here are some of my favorites...

In August, five ladies, three of them past brides of mine, went dress trashing! This is a new trend with brides, it inspires me and I am in love with it. Sometimes on your wedding day, you just don't have time to get all those great crazy - yet amazing shots that you see in magazines...and you just want them. Something a little more urban, a little dirty, or just edgy. Here it is! I will be offering these sessions twice a year, with five brides max per session (if we need more we'll add the,...seeing as I have 14 brides already for next year!) You will get a dvd slideshow just like the one below - from John owner of Coastline Studios - which by the way...did an AMAZING job - (brides who are still deciding if they need a videographer - this should help - photos just can't capture everything that a video does)

You will get a DVD Slideshow, CD Negatives to your photos, and Make-up by a Bobbi Brown Make-up Artist (Rachel - who is also available for your wedding - trust me it's worth it!) Your spouses are welcome to come to the last part of the session, if you want. But as you will see below, we all had a blast...I can't thank all of you girls and John enough for coming along with me on this little adventure - it was fabulous! go to the Ernsberger house! They have two adorble itty bitty babies...their tiny to me because my babies were 9 and 10 pounds. Here is one of my favorite pics...I always try to use a basket or platter from the clients home, it adds a personal touch, but when Heather handed me this bowl, I doubted they would fit...but they did and even fell asleep! Loved their creativity! What a beautiful day! The cabin that the girls are standing in, is where Mandy's mom lived during her childhood and it was moved to the Lansing Nature Center, where their wedding was.....Clint & Mandy were married in between the rows of pine trees...beautiful setting. They don't like cake...so they had a French wedding cake called a croquembouche and their favors were jelly bellies. Here is your sneak peak....

Picture 5 brides in a mini-van! That was us yesterday. We had a make-up artist (RACHEL) from Bobby Brown to enhance their features (brides if you want her info for your wedding, let me know), and they all brought their own dresses. They were all gorgeous and photogenic...I will be offereing this type of session to all of my brides in the spring and the fall, so look soon for a promotional video of this offer and you can see what it's all about. thanks ladies for spending the day with me, you all did an amazing job! here is a sneak peak...I know I still have two wedding to blog to, they're coming!

Here is a collection of the past week...to many give their own post, so here is a collection. Cute Madeline...who looked at me or smiled for every picture..amazing for a one year old! Baby Avery...has the most adorable pacifier picture ever. Jen's family while waiting for their third girl.... and the most amazing....the twins born to my friends Nate & Heather and big brother Ian....I have their "official session" tomorrow ..come back for those. These were shot very quickly in the hospital...and we officially got keys to our studio today!! More on that later. Here is a sneak peak of their wedding...I have never met a couple more in love...and high school sweethearts at that. They were married in Lansing under a willow tree, reception as well. There were so many great spots all at their location, which is a photographers dream! Did you know that most photographers with children work 1st & 3rd shift? Crazy, I know! I still have a wedding from Saturday to post (if I can get through all the photos...I took more than I usually do!) and an engagement session from Sunday as well. It might be mid week before you see them..I need a little rest after this weekend! The website company was running a contest/promo and I had to send a photo of myself holding a sign that said.."mamma" with my child....here is what Tim took of us...kind of cute! Hope you all enjoyed your moms today. I can't help but think about all the moms who I have met in this past year through the whispers program, that have lost their babies...there are far too many. Please pray with me for these moms...greiving the loss of a child is a pain that I hope I will never know, it is deep and beyond my comprehension. Please be thankful for the "mom" relationships that you have, and never take them for granted.

This is my grandma on the left and my 2 aunts on the right...it was great seeing them all together, and then we also got to visit my grandpa...who is doing great and remembered us all...I haven't seen him in 6 years.

This is where settled for the wedding in Perdido Key....the beaches were amazing. You can see Tim standing on the rocks...I was waiting for him to dramatically fall over...that never happened.

This was our first day home....right back to destroying the house. Baking soda...2 boxes...5 minutes.
